Introducing – Leonie Percy
I had the pleasure of connecting with Leonie a few years ago through a mutual friend. I immediately resonated with Leonie’s mission to help teach mums how to mother in the moment, children kindness and resilience and keeps families connected.
Leonie is a loving mother, passionate yoga and mindfulness teacher and author. Leonie is the founder of Yoga Mamata & author of the book Mother Om.
I loved Leonie’s work so much that I invited her to become an expert contributor for my online program, 5 Minutes 4 Mum. Leonie created an amazing series of meditation and mindfulness videos and resources as part of the module ‘5 Minutes 4 CALM’. These meditations are one of the most popular sections in the program … after all … don’t we all need a little more CALM in our life?
I hope you enjoy getting to Leonie as much as I have …
1. Can you tell me a little about you and your family?
I am chief mama to my business Yoga Mamata. I am a mentor, speaker, author and mindfulness teacher. I am a mindful mama to my son Lael, 7 and my daughter Luna, 1. We are a blended family and all live together with my partner Jarkko in Sydney.
2. How did you come to write Mother Om?
I went through a heart breaking divorce when Lael was almost 2. I struggled with motherhood. I had a traumatic birth (emergency c – section) breastfeeding issues and then I became a single mum for 3 years. It was not what I had imagined motherhood to be like. Mother Om was my way back to re-connecting with myself and finding joy again. This is why I am so passionate about teaching mums mindfulness.
3. What are the main benefits of mindfulness as a mother?
Oh so many. It is a profound tool for motherhood, business, relationships and life. Mindfulness teachers you to be present, in the moment without judgement. My journey has taught me that is where life happens. Not being stuck in the past or worrying about the future. Mums are overwhelmed, distracted and disconnected. Being mindful allows you live a meaningful life where you are able to “let go” of what doesn’t serve you like guilt and frustration. You can be present with yourself and your family.
4. How do you juggle running your business and being a Mum?
Mindfulness is about focus. I schedule my time so that when I am working, I work. When I am with the kids, I don’t work. When I am tired I rest. When I am overwhelmed I do nothing. This is mindfulness in action. Doing one thing at a time, Not multitasking constantly that leaves you feeling like you have achieved nothing.
5. What is your favourite thing to do for “me time”?
I love doing yoga and I meditate whenever I can every day even if it for just a moment. I meditate every night with Lael. It is the best part of my day to see him benefiting so much from finding stillness.
6. How do you make this actually happen?
My partner is very supportive and we have demi pairs that come and live with us for a few months at a time. I have 2 child free days a week so I use this time to do what I need to stay connected and be in flow.
7. What are you most grateful for at this point in your life?
I am so grateful for my divorce. At the time it was my worst nightmare but now I reflect and on my journey and I see that it was all meant to happen so I would start my business and write my book. My work helps many families stay connected and mums find meaning in their roles as mothers.
