I am an Aussie girl who these days is proud to call New Zealand home. As New Zealand is still new to me I don’t have a huge sense of investment in politics, who the Prime Minister is and so forth. But simply as a woman, and a mother of three daughters I was delighted for you when you became Prime Minister recently.
Today you announced you are expecting your first child – CONGRATULATIONS!
I wanted to take a moment to send some words of support as you embark on an amazing journey … becoming a mother … and doing it so publicly whilst holding such an important role in society.
Motherhood … it is never what you imagine it to be. That isn’t a bad thing at all. Some things are easier than you expect, some things are MUCH harder, and some things you never even knew could exist.
Whatever you experience I hope you have a wonderful group of people supporting you behind the scenes. People with who you can speak your truth, no matter what.
You don’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to be a perfect mum, a perfect wife, and you don’t have to be a perfect Prime Minister. Trust that you have all you need within you to embark on this journey. It may not all unfold the way you imagine now, but that is OK. However it rolls I know you will be amazing.
Ask for help. Often.
Every man and his dog is going to have an opinion and want to share it with you. During pregnancy, about giving birth, about being a Mum, about your choice to combine work and motherhood. All mums experience this but I can only imagine how much more will be directed at you. Only pay attention to people who you resonate with … politely ignore the rest. Trust that whatever way you choose to do, or not do things, is the best choice for you and your family. That is all that matters.
Make sure you make time and space just for you! This can be hard to do but it is essential to maintaining your personal well-being.
I wish you all the best in coming months. I hope your pregnancy goes smoothly and you are well. Although you don’t know me at all, I genuinely extend an invitation to you to reach out to me any time in the future if you need an extra support.
PS – perhaps later in the year I could invite you to be a part of my Inspirational Mums blog series? You will certainly be inspiring women all over New Zealand!
